CHAPTER 15
Steven
I thought this emergency action plan was going to give me and Aiza some alone time to talk, but it did the total opposite. My phone hadnât stopped ringing for the last hour. I was glad I could help, but Reesa had local businesses reaching out to me for guidance. I gave them the best advice I could, board up windows, move everything on the ground floor up if possible, and be prepared to move to higher ground if the tide came in. I couldâve put the information on a recorded line instead of repeating it over and over.
âI donât know about you, but I need coffee,â I said to Aiza.
âOkay. Iâll go and get us some,â she stated.
âI wasnât trying to send you. I am very capable of getting it myself. I was asking if youâd like to join me. Maybe grab a bite to eat too. If you hadnât noticed, we never ate lunch,â I reminded her.
âAnd I didnât have breakfast. Reesa called and asked me to come to work early to help prepare for the meeting that never took place,â she sighed. âI canât believe that we are doing all this and still have no idea if it is going to hit Tabiq.â
âWe go through the same thing all the time in Florida and along the east coast. But it is always better to play on the safe side. Itâs unfortunate when lives are lost because you donât prepare. Iâve seen it happen too many times.â Each year it seems to get worse. People are tired of preparing and nothing happens, and then they choose to do nothing. Thatâs when the storm hits and hits hard. âYou havenât answered my question. Do you want to take a break and eat?â
âI think I should, or I might just pass out from starvation,â she patted her stomach. âBut shouldnât we talk to Reesa first?â
âI donât work for her,â I replied.
Aiza crossed her arms. âYouâre forgetting that I do.â
Yes I have.
âTrue. Let me make the call,â I said.
âWhy?â
âBecause she really wants me to sign that contract. Sheâll probably give me just about anything I want right now,â I grinned.
Aiza laughed. âYou must know a different Reesa OâConnor than I do because she is not a pushover.â
And neither are you.
âThen I guess you can call,â I said.
âCall who?â Reesa said as she entered the dining room that we were working in.
Aiza said, âWe were thinking of taking a dinner break and just about to call you.â
âI think itâs a great idea. Itâs getting late and we have a lot to do tomorrow as well. Brice offered us all rooms here tonight. I said yes,â she said.
âYouâre all staying at the resort?â I questioned.
Reesa said, âNot all, but many of us. It just makes it easier to gather quickly if we need to for any developments. By the way, have you seen the latest weather reports?â I shook my head. âThe storm has turned and is now heading in our direction.â
âYou mean my grandmother was right?â Aiza asked, looking shocked.
